The May 2005 issue of FSE heralds a new era. The magazine has been re-designed to give it a modern and easy to read style. The purpose of the re-design is also to demonstrate the new era into which the magazine and fire safety are entering.
The re-design of FSE continues the process begun in January, when the frequency was increased to 10 times per year from six and the circulation was increased by 2500. The increased circulation is primarily aimed at mainland Europe. Just as standards and the applications of fire safety engineering are being developed on an international basis, so will the content of FSE.
The application of fire safety engineering principles, as opposed to just following prescriptive documents, is being adopted worldwide. Product standards and some guideline documents are increasingly being produced on a European and international basis. In Europe, meeting the requirements of the Construction Products Directive and the need for CE marking of products is now becoming more important, as harmonised European standards are published. The content of Fire Safety Engineering will reflect this trend.
No magazine is complete without a healthy interaction with you, the readers. To help us meet the needs of the variety of our readers, we welcome your views and comments on the content and style of the magazine. On our part, we are aware that, with legislative changes putting the responsibility for fire safety firmly on owners and occupiers of buildings, there is need for a balance between technical and issue led features. To ensure that readers are made aware of the changes that affect them, the news section of the magazine has been enhanced.
Another new feature that has been introduced is a final page, the ‘Last Word’, to enable the views and opinions of leaders in the fire safety world to be given a public airing.
The May 2005 issue of FSE provides up-to-date information on the developments in both active and passive fire protection, comments from the fire trades associations, and a preview of the leading fire show International Fire Expo, with the show catalogue forming the end section of the magazine.
