A fire at a detention centre in Vincennes, near Paris, has resulted in several injuries and the destruction of two buildings at the centre. The injuries were not serious and were mostly due to smoke inhalation.
The fire was started deliberately after a riot broke out following the earlier death of a Tunisian inmate from a heart attack. The centre is the focus of the French government’s crackdown on illegal immigrants, which aims to expel 26,000 people from the country this year.
The majority of the immigrants were relocated to other centres around France, though around 14 of them are thought to have escaped during the chaos caused by the fire.
