The landlord of a Milton Keynes property where a fire killed two residents has pleaded guilty to three charges under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) 2005 order.
The fire happened in the Fishermead area of the town in September 2010 in an unregistered HMO.
Lookman Adeyemi appeared at Amersham Law Courts on Friday 9 March and pleaded guilty to: failing to make a suitable and sufficient assessment of risk; failure to ensure that, in the event of danger, it was possible for people to evacuate the premises as quickly and as safely as possible; and insufficient provision of fire detectors and alarms at the premises.
Adeyemi also pleaded not guilty to a fourth count that there was inadequate emergency lighting in the premises, which was accepted by the court.
Speaking to local newspaper the Milton Keynes Citizen, Chris Bailey of Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said, “We are very pleased with today’s outcome. We look forward with interest to the judge’s sentencing remarks.
“The judge made it clear to the defendant that he could not rule out a custodial sentence.”
Sentencing is due on March 29.
