The IOT angle interests me too — I get that from a security angle, but is it something that will give the students tangible benefits as well?
The data is insignificant when you consider the amount of data required for IP CCTV from a DAtalog perspective
Hi, just to answer your question about data loads. Yes, we test and project both loads across the network and also into our data centre, server architectures. It’s a good point, as we collect more data we need to consider server architectures and scalability. We also have the cloud as an option maybe.
So testing it in an empty university will be enough to be sure it will run during semester?
I think on servers, some of the ideas about virtual servers for efficeincy are very interesting, I know we touched on that briefly, could you explain a little more how much power virtual servers save when compared to a normal one?
I remember attending a festival where they tried to datafy the way people bought drinks at the bars, it all sounded like a great plan until 30,000 people descended and blocked up the system and interferred with the wireless communications – good to know this stuff is being taken into consideration.
I guess tangible benefits are better services. We are also creating more autonomy for our users with more self-admin, room-booking and equipment, places within the building to connect to screens to practice presentations, live travel information etc
We are connecting our systems and applying business-rules and intelligence, it’s ever evolving like the ICT and inteliigent systems industry.
Does running that much data incur significant storage costs? Is the university running a keep everything policy?
Sorry I missed the radio portion, so if this has been answered, I apologize. But what sort of data does the intelligent building collect on students that would cause them privacy concerns? I can’t think of anything other than location, which their cell phones give out anyway.
That’s a good point Rodney, students probably fall into the demographic who are spewing out loads of personal information anyway!
But also a group who would find it concerning potentially if their data was being used irresponsibly. great question, Rodney.
Virtual servers: for us we save approximately 50% over a tradional server architecture. We use VM’s, the efficiencies are also in the decreased power use in a purpose made environement, hot aisle cold aisle, lights-out, remote-admin, energy policies applied
Is this project at Birmingham focused on all new builds? Or does some of this technology also get installed as a refurb?
depending on the size of the virtual server…we have a relatively small VM server at our office and its running 10 different applications that would have needed 10 x PC controllers…at 400 watts each that could add up to 4 KW and the our virtual server uses less than 1000 watts…that would be scalable for larger applications such as the university

True, @saul and @Robert Brown, but also a demographic that gets incensed about what little privacy they erroneously assume they have left.
The privacy issue is very important to us, we don’t want to cross any lines here or just be intrusive. We use access-control, attendance monitoring, student records to meet our obligations for student attendance monitoring and offer more targeted services.
Does storage space become an issue? For instance, how long would a University like Birmingham City need to hang on to CCTV footage for? Is there a legal requirement as it is an Educational facility?
The majority of our projects are carried out on upgrading existing buildings and consolidating multiple systems for larger organisations who want to centralise their systems to a single control room…this offers greater efficiencies and cost savings plus benchmarking accross different buildings
We have about 300TB for CCTV in a RAID environment. I am not an expert on how long the footage is stored for, but from memory it’s tiered according to importance by the security team. Again our data storage is modular so we can add more as required
Makes sense, Mark. Presumably, the newer the building, the easier it would be to integrate the systems in the first isnace.
Attendance monitoring is interesting then… are there any plans in place to use this in pattern recognition routines, offering specific help to students? Or integrating with other data streams to help students choose course units year to year?

We have MS business intelligence server, so yes we want to use it give give a more targeted service to our users. Exactly, more targeted help and specific information for them including better ways of helping international students with more nuanced BI
it can be more cost effective to develop a software interface for an installed system than replacing a system in use…we recently provided a solution for a University that wanted to extend the life of approximately 100 intruder detction systems. Being in business 21 years has enabled us to develop a substantial portfolio of integration modules so it can be easier in some cases…it all depends if it it commercially sunstainable
