The EBP is an EC project aimed at creating a web portal to exchange information and co-ordinate community activities between the main biometrics players in Europe. The EBP is based on contributions volunteered by authors, working according to a “Wikipedian” spirit.
Covering nine months from October 2005 to June 2006, the report analyses the technological trends regarding fingerprint, face, voice and iris recognition, as well as other new technologies such as vein pattern. It also explores the legal aspects and main applications of biometrics in Europe. This section argues that one of the biggest challenges is making progress on various fronts at the same time, such as law, technology and standards, and societal acceptance and concerns.
Ethical trends and market size are also discussed, before the final section which summarises how the 25 EU Member States are deploying biometrics, particularly in relation to biometric passports and ID cards.
