International Day for Disaster Reduction observed in India today

International Day for Disaster Reduction is being observed today. The day is observed on the second Wednesday of October to raise awareness about disaster risk reduction. It encourages people and governments to participate in building resilient communities and nations.

The National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM), the apex National Institute of the Government of India with the nodal responsibilities for human resource development, capacity building, training, research, documentation, public awareness and policy advocacy in disaster management, is observing the Day in New Delhi today.

The first e-learning self-study course on basic concepts of disaster management is being launched on this occasion. The e-learning self-study programme on disaster management is for the general public as well as government officials and other stakeholders who have the role and responsibility of managing disasters.

The aim of the course is to create interest and raise the level of knowledge, skill and awareness on disaster management which can be accessed by anyone from anywhere in the country as per users’ convenience in flexi time free of cost. To observe the day, NIDM also organized students march, film shows, lectures on disaster management and demonstrations for college students.

To enhance awareness among school students including the differently abled and to sensitize them towards disasters and their management, painting, poster and slogan competitions on the theme ‘Safety from Disasters’ are being organized in schools for the children in the age group of 13-17 years.

The Centres for Disaster Management at the state levels, are also organising similar activities at the state level.
