A fire extinguisher service engineer has received high praise from senior management at Kettering General Hospital NHS Trust for the part he played in the hospital winning a British Fire Services Association award for fire safety training. It is the first time an NHS establishment has won the award for 50 years.
Chubb Fire employee, Martin Andrews, has worked on the site since the company won the service contract in 2004, maintaining and updating equipment as well as playing a key role in the training of staff and fire marshals.
“The Trust has over 700 extinguisher units dispersed over a 35-acre site in a range of buildings, some of which are over 100 years old,” explains Roy Grogan, fire officer for Kettering General Hospital NHS Trust. “It is quite a challenge for any service engineer to know the locations of all the extinguishers, and the different restrictions that apply regarding entry during working hours. As well as the service and maintenance, Martin also plays a key role in our fire safety training.”
The hospital also runs three, two-day fire team courses each year which Martin attends, supporting the live fire demos and managing to turn around some 100 fire extinguishers between fires.
