That is the stark warning issued by the British Security Industry Association (BSIA) as SMT went to press.
Around 150,000 tonnes of waste is destroyed each year by so-called ‘information destruction’ firms but, according to the BSIA, this is only a small percentage of the overall amount of confidential waste generated by businesses in the UK. The remainder is sent to waste paper companies – who rarely have any form of security system in place – or is simply thrown into rubbish bins.
