I4S video: Lone Worker Protection at IFSEC 2012 – Barry Holt (IIRSM)

In 2012, IFSEC International’s organiser UBM has introduced an all-new area dedicated to lone worker protection.

Sponsored by lone worker safety solutions specialist Connexion2, the zone features many key exhibitors as well as a conference programme focused on crucial issues pertaining to lone worker safety.

On Day One of show, Monday 14 May, the BSIA’s technical director Alex Carmichael will be in Hall 3a at the NEC to examine BS 8484 and the part the Trade Association is playing to further the cause of the lone worker through its own dedicated group. This presentation takes place between 10.45 am and 11.30 am.

How to protect your lone workers when they’re travelling abroad is the subject matter for Mike Steere, international business development manager at SkyGuard, who’ll be at the lectern from 12.30 pm through until 1.30 pm.

Lone Worker Protection Area main sponsor Connexion2’s director Craig Swallow is also speaking for an hour on Monday 14 May – from 2.30 pm to 3.30 pm, in fact – and will be examining the role and value of lone worker technology across the key stakeholders in any organisation employing such a solution.

There are many other presentations, too, so click here for all the details.

Protecting the lives of lone workers

One such is to be given by Barry Holt, the director of policy and research at the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management.

The subject of this particular polemic – to be recited on Tuesday 15 May between 3.30 pm and 4.30 pm, and again on Wednesday 16 May from noon until 1.00 pm – is protecting the lives of lone workers. In essence, Holt will review the identification, evaluation and control of risks to lone workers both in remote environments and the home.

In our exclusive pre-IFSEC International video, Holt explains to Brian Sims (media solutions manager for UBM Live’s Security and Fire Portfolio) why he feels it has been an essential move by show organiser UBM to launch a dedicated zone for lone worker solutions.

He talks about the key messages he’ll be imparting during the two sessions he’s presiding over at conference, the prime focus for his own organisation and also addresses risk assessment requirements for self-employed lone workers.

Given that the risk landscape in this day and age is constantly evolving, do we perhaps need a fresh look at training to allow for those changing circumstances?

For the answer to that question you’ll have to watch the video interview (below).
