OSD hosts London 2012 Workshop for security practitioners

The event – to be hosted by the Government’s Olympic and Paralympic Security Directorate (OSD) on 16 July at the Metropolitan Police Service Training Centre at Hendon – is aimed at raising awareness of Games security planning, at the same time drawing on the widespread experience and expertise available in the private sector.

The OSD is part of the Office for Counter-Terrorism and Security in the Home Office. It works across Government and with partners including the Olympic Delivery Authority, LOCOG, the Metropolitan Police Service and other police, fire, ambulance and public safety and security agencies to oversee the delivery of a programme of work to secure the 2012 Games.

Understandably, the workshop organisers want to harness that industry expertise to highlight any issues that they will face in terms of timescales, procurement, capacity and capability around national co-ordination. In turn, this will help refine the specification for the project and provide confidence around the planning process.

Making use of the ‘Concept Viability’ process

The methodology for the event will follow that used by other Government projects. The process to be used has been developed by Intellect, and is known as ‘Concept Viability’. It encourages early engagement by Government with industry, and allows suppliers to demonstrate how the market can meet the need, provide early visibility of key risks and issues and gives suppliers the opportunity to manage expectations of what the market can (and cannot) contribute to the proposed programme.

This event is being staged with the help of the UK Security and Resilience Industry Suppliers’ Community (RISC), but the invitation to take part extends to any private sector company or organisation with a relevant interest.

RISC – which brings together the UK industrial community to support the Government in creating a more secure and safe environment for UK citizens – has helped the OSD work with the family of Trade Associations and Think Tanks that support it. These include the British Security Industry Association, the Defence Manufacturers’ Association (DMA), Intellect and the Society of British Aerospace Companies.

Anyone attending the London 2012 Workshop must sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement reflecting the sensitive nature of this work.
