A 55 per cent reduction in crime was achieved as a result of the new security measures.
The three-year project – codenamed Operation Hawkeye – was initiated by a partnership involving the Home Office, London Underground and British Transport Police and was intended to reduce vandalism and theft, and improve public safety.
Andre Williams, who was responsible for managing the project on behalf of ADT’s City of London branch said: “To cut car park crime by over half is an amazing achievement and offers commuters added peace of mind when using the park and ride system.”
ADT installed 636 cameras at 61 separate car parks adjacent to stations, offering 100 per cent coverage of park and ride facilities across the underground network.
Pictures are beamed to three area control rooms in West Ham, Finsbury Park and Wembley Park and the system is managed by BTP on behalf of LUL.
ADT has also won a GB pound 600,000 contract to maintain and upgrade the system for the next three years.
Operation Hawkeye won Best Partnership Initiative in the 2001 Security Excellence Awards.
