It can be tough to afford advertising as a small, independent installer business, but Ken Cheek from Essex has managed to secure GB pound 2.5 million (US$3.2 million) worth of advertising this summer.
The telecoms engineer — specializing in video surveillance, door entry, and data cabling — is the owner of a small business called Five Star Comms, employing two part-time engineers. Alongside three others, he has been picked to be the face of a new campaign from Volkswagen for their Transporter vans.
Ken Cheek, owner of Five Star Comms, will feature on the VW ads
Ken’s picture will feature alongside VW’s tagline “We never forget the most important name on our vans. Yours”. His image will be used in advertising across the country this summer, in a campaign worth GB pound 2.5m ($3.2 million), after being nominated by his local Volkswagen Van Centre.
You can expect to see his face everywhere this summer, in a campaign that Ken hopes will lead to a significant increase in business. In a press statement, he said:
When I first heard from the ad agency I took it with a pinch of salt. Then they told me I would be famous for the whole of the summer. It only hit home when at the photo shoot. It took so long to do it, I realised it was serious. I’m really hoping that people will see the adverts and give me a chance to quote.
The campaign — as well as attempting to sell plenty of vans — is hoping to help out small businesses across the UK. A spokesperson said:
These ambitious businesses are so vital to the country’s economy, so entrepreneurs like Ken are already stars in many ways. We know it’s tough out there for many businesses and we are committed to working with our customers to support them through the range of services we offer. We thought there was no better way to show this than to let them benefit from a GB pound 2.5m ad campaign.
VW is looking for others to take part in the campaign, so if you’re interested in getting your slice of millions of pounds worth of free publicity, you should visit the VW Commercial Vehicles Facebook page.
