To coincide with the news that the Independent Police Complaints Commission has called for powers to investigate private security firms that have been given policing roles, this week’s Song About Security is none other than Private Investigations by Dire Straits.
This somewhat moody tune starts with a long, slow instrumental introduction, after which guitarist supreme Mark Knopfler speaks about the disillusionment and bitterness of a betrayed lover, comparing his position to a private investigator uncovering a scandal (according to the entry in Wikipedia, anyway).
The tune is taken from the album Love Over Gold and reached number 2 in the UK singles chart.
