Advance Security Breakfast Seminar focuses on 2012 Olympic Games

With less than 12 months to go until the official opening of the 2012 Olympic Games, Advance Security UK has organised a special seminar designed to examine how the event will impact on security and continuity for London businesses.

The Advance Security Breakfast Seminar – which follows on from a similar event held earlier this year and focused on the counter-terror agenda – takes place on Wednesday 21 September from 8.00 am through until 10.00 am at the SMBCE, 99 Queen Victoria Street in London, with breakfast served until 8.30 am.

Speakers include the BSIA’s 2012 project director David Evans, Jonathan Crabb (head of development services at URS/Scott Wilson) and Andrew Clancy, principal security consultant and director at ISR UK.

Recently awarded The Imbert Prize by the Association of Security Consultants for his excellent work on helping the develop the Bridging The Gap project, David Evans is responsible for bringing together the work of the BSIA’s membership in the lead-in to next summer’s Games.

For his part, Jonathan Crabb is supporting the Olympic Delivery Authority through the Travel Advice to Business programme, which provides transportation advice to organisations due to be affected by the Olympic Games.

Andrew Clancy is a former Government-trained Counter-Terrorism Security Advisor and security planner for the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG), more of which anon.

Topical and relevant information for clients

Speaking about this forthcoming event, Richard Bailey – managing director at Advance Security UK – told SMT Online: “In January of this year we held our first Breakfast Seminar at Canary Wharf covering the threat of terrorism within the Couriers and Air Cargo infrastructure. This proved to be a great success, with over 50 attendees from across the security industry and excellent feedback both on the day and through subsequent follow-up.”

Bailey continued: “We were obviously keen to develop this further but wanted to ensure the subject matter – as in January – was topical and relevant to our client base. Following consultation with our customers and with less than 12 months to go until the 2012 Olympic Games, we decided to look at how the Games will affect the security and continuity measures for businesses in the City of London.”

In conclusion, Bailey enthused: “As such, we have pulled together three excellent speakers as secured a fantastic venue. We’re hopeful that we can once again provide a suitable platform for information sharing and discussion that will benefit the security community as this major event approaches.”

LOCOG publishes 2010-2011 annual report and accounts

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games has just published its 2010-2011 financial report and accounts.

The full report and accounts have been submitted to Companies House, and can be viewed on the official London 2012 website.

The core operating budget for the London 2012 Games is circa GB pound 2 billion, and is financed by private-sector revenue programmes, including domestic and international sponsorship, merchandising and licensing, ticket sales and a proportion of the revenue raised by the IOC through selling global television broadcast rights as well as global sponsorship.

As of 31 March 2011, LOCOG had signed domestic sponsorship deals totalling more than GB pound 670 million in value. LOCOG has now stated that the domestic sponsorship target of GB pound 700 million has been reached, following the announcement of Westfield as LOCOG’s 44th domestic sponsor.

In addition, in the period to 31 March 2011 the Company signed deals for licensed merchandise sales which will generate a minimum guaranteed amount of GB pound 44 million, with income expected to be in the region of GB pound 86 million.

At year end, LOCOG had also secured GB pound 266 million of contractual hospitality ticketing income and client group ticket sales. This excludes income from public ticket sales for the Olympic Games which was received after year end. Tickets for the London 2012 Paralympic Games are on sale from 9-26 September.

Operating progress in the last twelve months

Operating progress announced by LOCOG for the last 12 months includes:

  • developing a comprehensive sport testing programme to test specific elements of operations at the majority of the competition venues (his programme delivered 18 test events in the summer of 2011)
  • completing over 200 procurement projects, with 75% of sports equipment procurement now in place
  • announcing the 25 stand-alone training venues to be used by 15 sports immediately before and during competition
  • good progress on Games-time transport operations, including the announcement of the Olympic Route Network and Paralympic Route Network, and the appointment of the bus operator for London 2012 to provide buses, drivers and other services at Games time
  • delivering distinctive and imaginative campaigns to engage the British public in volunteering, ticketing and the Olympic Torch Relay
  • attracting quarter of a million applications to be volunteers, and running a national selection process to select 70,000
  • engaging the whole of the UK: through the Cultural Olympiad, Open Weekend, the Inspire Programme and Pre-Games Training Camps (over 80 agreements signed to date)

Sebastian Coe, cairman of LOCOG, commented: “After eight years of bidding and planning, we have almost reached the summit of our Games preparations. We continue to deliver against our objectives as demand for involvement in all things ‘London 2012’ goes from strength to strength. Together with our partners we are testing all aspects of the Games.”

Lord Coe added: “With under 12 months to go to the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games, our journey towards staging the world’s biggest and most important sporting event is now clearer than ever, and I would like to thank the LOCOG team, our stakeholders and our commercial partners for all the work that has brought us to this stage.”
