April Met meeting to focus on public order
Top of the agenda will be a discussion of a review of public order policing, carried out by the MPS’s Public Order Branch, in consultation with the MPA. Its objectives were to review public order policies, tactics, equipment and procedures to ensure they were fit for purpose.
Additionally, Deputy Commissioner Paul Stephenson will give an update on operational policing issues in London and present a written performance report.
Other items on the agenda include:
* MPA Disability Equality Scheme 2006 – 2009;
* MPS Corporate Volunteer Programme;
* MPS Drugs Strategy; and
* Pan London lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender (LGBT) Strategic Group.
Len Duvall, chair of the MPA, said that public order policing was of major importance in London, nothing that in the past year alone over 300 large-scale gatherings, 500 football matches and a further 100 sporting events have been policed by the public order branch.
“It is essential that public order policing tactics and procedures are transparent, publicised and accepted by the public as well as being cost effective and delivering best value,” Duvall said.
He added: “Whilst most current public order policing tactics remain fit for purpose, this review was instigated to ensure that, along with other MPS branches, public order policing is fully integrated in the MPS modernisation programme.”
The meeting will be held in meeting room 1 (ground floor), 10 Dean Farrar Street, London SW1 on Thursday 26 April 2007 at 10.00 a.m.
