Banksy’s attack on the surveillance state
The massive painting – believed to be the secretive artist’s biggest yet in the Capital – popped up on Monday morning in a busy road off Oxford Street.
Looming several storeys high over a Post Office yard, it features a young boy painting the words “One nation under CCTV”, while a security guard and his dog look on.
Reports say the artist must have erected scaffolding to complete the job, somehow avoiding detection in one of London’s most surveyed areas.
Although his identity remains a mystery, Banksy is thought to come from Bristol. His politically-motivated art has appeared around the world and he famously left his mark on the West Bank barrier separating Israel from Palestinian territories.
Banksy’s trademark stencil-style paintings have been known to sell for tens of thousands of pounds.
