Barclays upgrades free mobile security

The offer of free Kaspersky Mobile Security follows Barclays’ groundbreaking announcement in July 2008 that it would provide the award-winning Internet Security 2009 solution free of charge to the two million customers who are registered for its online banking service.

“Barclays has offered customers one of the best security packages of all online banks over the last two years,” explained Sean Gilchrist, the director of electronic banking at Barclays. “It’s important that customers protect their mobile phones from all threats in the same way they do their computers by downloading this new software.”

When phones are lost or stolen

Easily installed on the web-enabled mobile phone of a Barclays customer, Kaspersky Mobile Security delivers valuable protection in the case of loss or theft of the device. If a phone is lost, the owner can secure all data and access to it until their phone is recovered. In the case of theft, all information may be remotely wiped.

Additionally, should a new SIM card be entered to the device, a hidden SMS will be sent informing of the details of the new SIM card to be passed to the device provider and relevant authorities.

In addition, Kaspersky Mobile Security provides award-winning defence against attacks (viruses, trojans, worms, spyware, backdoors, keyloggers, rootkits, phishing and spam/hacker attacks) from cybercriminals looking to profit by way of the mobile Internet. Kaspersky Mobile Security also prevents SMS spam.

Covert stealing on the increase

Malcolm Tuck – the managing director at Kaspersky Lab – added: “Mobile theft and mobile Internet crime is on the rise. In fact, earlier this month we detected a crimeware program designed by cybercriminals with the sole purpose of covertly stealing from the owner, without the device ever leaving their hands.”

Tuck continued: “The ability to manage your finances from your PC or web-enabled mobile device has revolutionised banking. However, it’s vitally important to ensure that it is done so with up-to-date security measures in place. We applaud Barclays for this new initiative.”
