BSIA: making its mark at Security and Policing Exhibition 2012
The event, which takes place in Farnborough from today through unitl 2 February, is the UK’s only secure event for displaying the latest security equipment for law enforcement and public security, with exhibitors carefully selected following a stringent application procedure.
The exhibition is attended by police forces both from the UK and worldwide, including chief constables and their department representatives, as well as the emergency services and Government departments such as HM Prison Service, customs and immigration services, Government security and the Ministry of Defence.
This year’s exhibition includes a full programme of briefings on topics including technical surveillance, conflict management and an Olympic security update involving the Government’s Olympic Security Directorate (OSD), with whom the BSIA liaises closely via its dedicated project director for 2012, David Evans.
Contributors from further afield will include the European Commission and the US Department of Homeland Security.
Fantastic international reputation
James Kelly, chief executive of the BSIA, commented: “The BSIA is delighted to once again be part of this prestigious event. This is one of the most significant closed police and security equipment exhibitions in the UK that enjoys a fantastic international reputation.”
Kelly continued: “Exhibiting at the event will enable the BSIA to establish further contact with key stakeholders such as the police and Government and demonstrate how the security industry can work alongside them to better protect the nation.”
In conclusion, the BSIA’s leader explained: “The exhibition also provides an ideal opportunity for the BSIA’s own Export team to engage with overseas visitors and maximise the potential for working together on international security issues.”
Those attending Security and Policing 2012 are welcome to find out more about the private security industry and the work of the BSIA by visiting the Association at Stand D10.

Streaming innovation from Synectics at Security and Policing 2012
Synectics, a subsidiary of the Quadnetics Group, is using Security and Policing 2012 to showcase (on Stand A16) its range of solution driven technologies for the policing, law enforcement and defence industries.
Among the innovations on show will be a “ground-breaking product enhancement” to VEEcam that captures evidential quality audio-video from body-worn recording devices and streams content over advanced next generation IP radio networks.
The V-IP streaming video product developed by Synectics sees its popular VEEcam rugged body-worn video recording system (used by clients including the MoD, the police and the BBC) enhanced with Ethernet connectivity. This enables footage recorded from the device to be streamed via the user’s radio.
Andy Keene, sales manager at Synectics’ defence division, believes the breakthrough has important implications.
He explained: “The ability to stream high quality video across military or law enforcement radio networks from such a small and rugged device opens up a wide range of possibilities. As well as ‘in the field’ evidence gathering potential, the capacity for content to be streamed to, and viewed from, command centres which can then offer real-time strategic input or training guidance is hugely significant.”
In addition to the innovations on show at Stand A16, visitors to the Team Falcon Stand (E60) will also be able to view Synectics technology in action.
As members of the Team Falcon consortium – a group of leading British companies working in partnership to develop and integrate a range of technologies and capabilities for complex security systems – Synectics will be demonstrating the unique benefits of its Synergy security management software, integrated with Electrosonic Displaywall technology.
Azadar Shah, the managing director of Synectics’ networks division, said: “We’re very proud to be part of the Team Falcon consortium. To have the opportunity to attend an event such as this and show how our software is helping the police and wider security sector as a whole is fantastic.”
Shah concluded: “Together with the products on display at Stand A16, Synectics is really demonstrating its 360 degrees approach to law enforcement and defence solutions: from developing the latest technology in data capture and streaming through to state-of-the-art monitoring and control.”
General Dynamics UK showcases its capabilities
General Dynamics UK will showcase its leadership in security and resilience solutions at Security and Policing 2012.
On Stand E59, in addition to demonstrating its capability in protecting Critical National Infrastructure (CNI), General Dynamics UK will be highlighting its command and Control Room solutions for the emergency services as well as its wide range of imaging solutions for border, coastal and general surveillance.
General Dynamics UK will also sponsor the Security Innovation Award run by industry representative body A|D|S for the third year running. The award winner will be announced on the first night of the Security andPolicing 2012 show.
The company boasts a 50-year pedigree in protecting CNI around the globe, from borders, airports, commercial ports and communications centres to some of the largest oil and gas installations in the world. Key facilities currently protected by General Dynamics include the Shell Pearl GTL facility in Qatar, the NESTE Oil NExBTL plant in Singapore and Khalifa Port in the United Arab Emirates as well as London Heathrow Airport in the UK and Vancouver International Airport, Canada.
Representatives from General Dynamics UK will be on-hand to explain its systems integration approach.
Emergency Services Control Rooms
General Dynamics UK’s emergency Control Room approach is based around a fully integrated command and control system that enables operators in any emergency service to react to scenarios in a rapid and controlled manner and, most importantly, co-ordinate with other emergency services.
In addition to the emergency Control Room scenario that the company’s experts will be running, General Dynamics UK will also demonstrate two new security-focused software applications: GeoSuite and 3D GIS.
GeoSuite is a web-based, multimedia common operating system that allows users at all levels of operations to collect, report and share information. It improves situational awareness and facilitates collaboration and information-sharing and analysis between users.
GeoSuite is designed specifically for users such as police officers, rescue workers, field agents and volunteers. It provides critical information across the full spectrum of operations and connects users in the field to leadership, supervisors and analysts in the operations centre. The user interface is customisable and provides immediate access to critical near real-time information, data sensor feeds and historical data.
General Dynamics UK’s 3D GIS (Geographic Information System) software tool highlights the company’s approach to systems integration for telecommunications and security systems. With the introduction of the 3D GIS tool, the benefits of an integrated system can be further leveraged as entire facilities can be scanned, mapped and geo-referenced to build a virtual 3D model of all assets, allowing the user to see a detailed virtual representation of his facilities and surrounding environment.
Surveillance solutions on view
General Dynamics UK will also be demonstrating three of its surveillance imaging solutions. The first, the Portable Situational Awareness System (P-SAS), is the larger of the three camera systems on display. It provides a portable situational awareness capability for periods of time ranging from one hour upwards with 360 degree day, night and all weather capability. Based on field-proven technology, the system has been integrated and packaged to be rugged, quick to assemble even in low light conditions and simple to use.
Typical time into service when unpacked is less than 20 minutes.
The P-SAS can be customised to suit mission-specific objectives including an optional laser range finder, infrared (IR) pointer device and alternative power sources such as vehicular power, intelligent battery packs or even power from portable solar panels. Its design flexibility enables P-SAS to be used for a number of challenging roles including persistent surveillance and vehicle-based reconnaissance.
The Short Range Situational Awareness System (SR-SAS) is a smaller and lighter camera system that can be carried by hand and provides situational awareness with colour, low-light monochrome and zero-light thermal recognition and identification.
The Modular Situational Awareness System (M-SAS) provides a patrol ultra lightweight surveillance system. It provides interchangeable colour, low-light monochrome and zero-light thermal recognition and identification. It’s designed for dismounted operations and flexible uses.
