Security at Napier University in the heart of Edinburgh is soon to be upgraded thanks to the addition of a networked access control system (the contract for which is currently out to tender).
The University’s management team intends to install a system which will allow security staff to control access to buildings, and remotely lock both external and internal doors from a central Control Room. “The system we want should allow us to control access to all of our properties, and to zone-off certain areas such as laboratories, thereby barring access to unauthorised personnel,” said Patrick Hughes, the University’s director of facilities services. “We can also program 24-hour access to certain areas, such as the Jack Kilby Computing Centre.”
Proximity card access control systems allow for security staff to define which cards can access specific areas. If a card is subsequently lost, that card’s access privileges may be cancelled so that tight security is maintained.
Once the networked access system is in place, Hughes and his team will be looking to link-in CCTV and car park control barriers under the same system.
