CCTV: US drivers warned after red light crash

CCTV footage of a huge crash at a junction in Roselle Park, New Jersey, has been released highlighting the dangers of running red lights.

The footage was released by American Traffic Solutions (ATS), who provide red light cameras to US public authorities and law enforcement organisations.

Red light cameras are said to be unpopular in many parts of the US, and this video showing a car flying through the air after running a red light is part of a campaign to convince people both of the importance of red light cameras and of obeying red lights.

Red light violations have been reduced by almost half at this junction since May 2011, according to ATS. Additionally, 94% of vehicles that have been issued a penalty have not been issued a second, indicating a high level of compliance.

As the video shows, the potential dangers of running a red light are huge, but fortunately no one was killed in this incident. The role that CCTV can play in reducing such incidents cannot be underestimated, according to police chief Paul Morrison.

He said: “I want people to realise what can happen when someone runs a red-light. By showing this video, we hope people will realise running red-lights can have tragic consequences. Our camera program is reducing the number of red-light running violations, but we still need to reach more people. It’s a matter of life and death to stop on red.”
