Construction workers set fire to school roof

A fire at a school in Ongar, Essex, is thought to have been started accidently by construction workers.

Students and staff were evacuated from Dr Walker’s Church of England School after its roof caught fire on 29 June.

Called at 10.42 am, firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze after an hour.

According to local paper, This is Total Essex, builders were working on the school’s new kitchen when the fire broke out.

Kevin Smith, officer in charge from Essex Fire and Rescue Service, told the paper: "There were flames coming out of the roof and lots of smoke when we got there. It looks as though it started from building work where naked flames were being used to put some felt down on the roof.

"It was a complete accident. There was no suspicious element."

Approximately 15 firefighters attended the incident, which seriously damaged the roof. Crews used a positive pressure ventilation fan to clear smoke from the building.
