Exeter cathedral samples the air

[

Twelve Stratos-Quadra aspirating smoke detection units from AirSense Technology were installed at Exeter Cathedral in March last year and commissioned as fully operational by mid-summer. Previously, the cathedral had relied on a conventional non-aspirating smoke detection system, but this failed to cover all areas including the neighbouring Chapter House.

The new system was brought about following a survey carried out on the cathedral, which suffered a fire four years ago when an alter cloth was set alight in an area without detection, resulting in GB pound 30,000 worth of damage and some loss of artefacts. Technical Alarm Systems were the project suppliers and Forest Electrical were the installers.

Exeter Cathedral was officially founded in 1050 and acquired a ‘new’ building in around 1270, though the original Norman towers still remain.
