Extra holidays for up to six million workers
The government has said that the change will benefit up to 3.5 million women and 2.5 million men as the minimum legal holiday entitlement is gradually increased from 20 days a year to 28 days a year in 2009.
Jim Fitzpatrick, DTI Employment Relations Minister said:
“This extra time off will make a real difference in the lives of hard-working people – a proper rest from work and more time to spend with their families and friends.
“Businesses will benefit too – from reduced absenteeism and a workforce who are more motivated and productive.
“We have listened to all parties responding in the latest consultation, and we have agreed a number of changes in the way the new holidays will be brought in.”
After the initial four days have been added in October, companies will be allowed to continue to ‘buy out’ the additional leave entitlement (the four extra days) until April 2009, when all businesses must give their staff a minimum of 28 days leave per year.
However, an ‘early implementation incentive’ has been devised to encourage businesses to get involved and to accelerate the process.
Commenting on the new regulations, the Confederation of British Industry’s Deputy Director-General John Cridland said:
“The Government is right to introduce the extension of statutory annual leave gradually over the next two years, a ‘big bang’ approach would have been more painful for employers.”
Full details of the scheme can be found on the DTI’s website.
