Fire and smoke damper units guidance

A new guidance document on the basic criteria for the installation of fire and smoke damper units in fire resisting compartments has been produced by the Association for Specialist Fire Protection.

The document is aimed to help in the manufacture, specification, installation and inspection of dampers used as part of heating, ventilation and air conditioning ductwork systems.

Also known as the Grey Book, it emphasises the importance of installing dampers according to manufacturers’ recommendations and encourages specifiers to ensure that only fully fire tested dampers are used. The Grey book covers: scope and definitions; damper types; main design criteria and responsibilities; system design; recommendations for installers; and comments on selecting suitable fire protection materials for making good after installation. It also contains details of test methods for fire resisting dampers and assessment of test data.

The guidance is published in association with a range of specialist associations and bodies and complements another recently published ASFP publication on fire rated and smoke outlet

ductwork – known as the Blue Book. Copies of both documents can be downloaded at www.asfp.org.uk.
