A wood pellet plant in Russia has been fitted with a fire detection and sprinkler system by Minimax.
Claimed to be the largest of its kind in the world, the pellet plant is operated by the Russian cellulose and paper
manufacturer Vyborgskaja Cellulosa.
The Andritz Feed and Biofuel, a company of the international Technology Group, which equips the production with wood debarking lines, a chip handling system, belt dryers, hammer mills and pellet mills, selected Minimax systems to provide fire protection.
A spokesman said: "In a wood pellet factory, almost the whole spectrum of modern fire protection equipment comes into use. If such equipment comes from one source, fewer interfaces are required, thus ensuring perfect installation and operation.
"The uniform operation of the fire protection systems also contributes considerably to increased safety in the plant."
Detection and MiniFog fire water spray systema have been installed in areas where the wood is finely ground, as
well as the pellet press lines and critical areas of four, double-storey belt dryers.
They have been linked and are monitored through a combined fire detection control panel in the control room of the plant.
Having fire sprinklers can help prevent a fire from getting out of control. When you are dealing with something as flammable as wood pellets, great precaution must be taken. Fire sprinklers can begin dousing a fire in the initial 15 to 90 seconds, while firefighters will likely take 10 minutes to arrive on scene.

I never would have thought that a wood pellet plant could offer fire protection. That being said, there’s a lot of ways that technology can be leveraged these days. I hope that people get more smart about how they protect their homes. It would be a pity to have more senseless destruction by fire.

This wood pellet plant had better have a good fire protection system. Since almost everything is made out of wood there, it would seem like a fire accident is just waiting to happen.
