First student cohort joins crowd safety degree at Buckinghamshire New University
The course is a one-year top-up qualification to the High Wycombe-based educational establishment’s Foundation Degree in Crowd and Safety Management, which was the first in the UK to focus on crowd safety. Applicants do not necessarily have to have completed the Foundation Degree to apply.
Launched this month, the degree is taught through a series of workshops, including formal lectures and group work sessions, with the students working alone and in groups before completing a module assessment.
It’s taught by a mixture of industry professionals and academics and its first cohort is drawn from crowd safety professionals from countries including Australia, Switzerland, Denmark, Norway and, of course, the UK.
Buckinghamshire New University is also the base for the International Centre for Crowd Management and Security Studies, and students on the degree programme will focus on a range of issues from the nature and structure of events through to administration, design, risk management and how to deal with clients and consumers.
Developing skills in crowd safety management
The course is aimed at developing skills in crowd safety management planning in line with students’ study and career objectives in order to leave them well-rounded to pursue or develop their careers in the industry.
Other areas covered include developing students’ understanding of environmental factors such as crowd psychology and risk, and gaining an understanding of the history and context of crowd safety management in the modern day events industry.
Course leader Owen Grainger-Jones told SMT Online: “More than 100 industry professionals have graduated from the Foundation Degree since it was launched in 2005. We know there is demand to build on that work, and for people to complete a degree.”
Grainger-Jones continued: “Ultimately, the degree programme is aimed at equipping students with transferable skills, such as problem-solving, the ability to work in groups and under pressure, and to enhance their creativity and self-discipline. We’re building on the success of the Foundation Degree and we’re delighted to be launching the new BA (Honours) course in Crowd Safety Management.”
