G4S wins £300 million integrated FM work from UK Government

This is one of the first contracts to be awarded by the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) within a new framework agreement set up as part of a nationwide review of how it manages its courts and related buildings.

G4S is one of only seven companies listed on the new framework, which is expected to incorporate some major new facilities services programmes.

The core contract, which starts on 1 February 2012, is worth around GB pound 35 million annually but also offers the potential for up to GB pound 25 million in project work each year.

Under the contract Terms and Conditions, G4S will provide more than 150 maintenance, catering, cleaning, security and energy management services to over 340 court, tribunal and administration buildings across the Midlands, Wales and the North of England.

G4S will employ around 800 staff to fulfil the contract, the majority of whom will be transferred from existing service providers.

The G4S commitment to industry and professional standards, partnering and continuous improvement was a key factor in securing this new contract which itself builds on the company’s position as one of the UK’s fastest-growing facilities services provider.

Other major wins in 2011 including the Birmingham Heartlands and Liverpool Women’s’ Hospitals, and security services at all RBS locations across the UK and Ireland.

Commenting on this news, David Taylor-Smith (CEO for G4S in the UK and Ireland) said: “G4S has been a major provider of custodial and justice services to the Ministry of Justice for many years through our prisons and court escorting contracts, and we are delighted to have been selected by the MoJ to provide a comprehensive range of facilities services to its broader UK estate.”

As a major provider to Government, G4S is fully committed to helping it deliver the savings it needs in the current financial climate.

“We are confident that we will be able to deliver the MoJ these essential services effectively and efficiently,” asserted Taylor-Smith, “and at significantly less cost than the current multiple providers.”

In conclusion, he said: “The outsourcing of facilities services is a growing trend both in the UK and overseas, and we expect both Governments and corporations to continue to look to the private sector to outsource many of their non-core functions.”

BBC’s Adam Mynott joins G4S as director of media relations

G4S is also pleased to announce the appointment of ex-BBC World Correspondent Adam Mynott as director of media relations.

Mynott’s last role was as one of the BBC’s World Affairs correspondents. He has previously held a wide variety of roles such as bureau chief for East Africa, South Asia correspondent and sports correspondent during two Olympic Games and two World Cups.

He will now be responsible for developing communications programmes to help support G4S’ strategy and raise the profile of the company globally.

“After a fascinating and varied career at the BBC I found the offer to join G4S impossible to resist,” he explained. “The company operates in many places around the world where I have worked for BBC News. It’s growing fast in developing markets where I have spent much of the past decade, and the company won the contract to secure the London Olympic and Paralympic Games next year – we are such a good fit.”

Debbie McGrath, group communications director for G4S, added: “We’re delighted to have Adam joining our corporate communications team at G4S. He brings with him a wealth of experience from his time at the BBC, and we are very excited about the opportunities his appointment will bring.”
