Scooters are lightweight and immensely popular in South East Asia, but many fail to meet local emission standards and regulations due to lack of emission testing and routine maintenance.
In Taiwan, a local environmental protection agency decided to take action against an escalating air pollution problem and installed the GeoVision ANPR system to help with daily on-road inspections.
The system was installed at a number of checkpoints and when a motorcycle approaches its number plate is automatically read and compared with the blacklist data stored in the database. GeoVision says that this process takes less than 0.2 of a second.
Using the system authorities are now able to catch, on average per day, 1,000 motorcycles that have failed to meet the emission law requirement – comparing to an average of 200 motorcycles caught per day prior to implementation.
It believes this installation has led to a significant improvement in law enforcement efficiency, as well as improving government revenue through violation tickets. GeoVision added that as motorcyclists become aware of the new technology motorcycle owners are starting to obey the emission laws and take their motorcycles to the test centre for smog check and maintenance.
