However, it’s not easy for managing directors and/or senior officials from the larger providers to attend these events and conferences which seem to be growing in frequency very rapidly. Indeed we must all try our very best to turn up at these events, but with a thriving industry and the pressures of day-to-day issues and operations weighing heavy, attendance is not always a given.
With the industry undergoing a great deal of change once again now that the roll-out of regulation in Scotland is in full flow, I must say that I’m not surprised attendance was poor.
Attendance would have been particularly hard for the companies who run very flat management structures as their managers simply don’t have the time. It’s impossible for some if you also add-in the distance factor.
A managing director based in Wakefield, for example, would have to take the best part of two days away from his or her business to attend, which is neither ideal nor practical from their perspective.
Perhaps we need to come up with an alternative to these seemingly incessant conferences and events. I am the first to promote our industry, but we need to be open-minded and realistic. Maybe a number of smaller events across the country might be a better plan, with Keynote Speakers from the region attending alongside senior managers of the companies with headquarters in that area?
