Hafele awarded commendation for hospital project
The successful project was a collaboration with the largest trade- only supplier of security system equipment in the country, ADI Gardiner.
The team were awarded the prize after their work at the Trevor Gibbens rehabilitation unit at Maidstone Hospital in Kent. The awards are run in conjunction with the Royal Institute of British Architects, and are designed to identify and reward excellence in the field of Architectural Ironmongery.
The Trevor Gibbens unit is part of an NHS hospital offering a secure setting for the rehabilitation and treatment of mentally disordered offenders. Designed by Building Ideas, also of Maidstone, the project required ironmongery that offered maximum security with limited opportunity for self-harm. At the same time, designers tried to create a warm ‘homely’ feel for patients.
Hafele’s Access Control Product Manager David Edwards and ADI-GARDINER’s Local Access Control Sales Executive Mark Gibbon chose the BSB Progeny system after a series of meetings. They felt this would meet all of the criteria required by the client without being obtrusive to patients, who have to be interned for their own protection. Mark Gibbon involved also BSB’s Technical Director Ian Bend to ensure a smooth installation.
Rugby-based Hafele won the award despite stiff competition from over 50 other buildings. The project team specified specially designed and colour coordinated anti-ligature pull handles, which were installed with tamper proof fixings, and electronic locks were linked to a full online access system with a 12 month audit trail. The final system also used various locking solutions from Magnetic Solutions with a custom built button system supplied by 3E Security.
Head of Hafele UK’s Architectural Ironmongery Department Mike Kelly commented: “Although this was a difficult project, our team rose to the challenge to provide a top class solution. The judges recognised this was a superior specification with a non institutional design combined with eye-catching colour”.
