High security number plates for Chandigarh vehicles from Aug

From August 1, all new vehicles in India’s Union Territory of Chandigarh would be registered with high security registration number plates. The transport department on Monday notified the implementation of the high security registration number plates in the union territory, making it compulsory for registration of vehicles with high security registration plates.

According to news reports, for vehicles, which are already registered in Chandigarh, the deadline to get High Security Registration Number Plates has been fixed as July 31, 2013. There are more than 7.8 lakh registered motor vehicles in Chandigarh.

As per the new provisions, the registration number plate shall be fastened on the front and rear of two-wheelers. In case of three and four wheelers, a third registration plate in the form of a self-destructive sticker shall be affixed on the windshield of the vehicle.

In pursuant to Central Motor Vehicle Rules, as notified by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to introduce High Security Registration Plate System in India, the UT Transport Department, today notified “the implementation of the High Security Registration Plates in the Union Territory of Chandigarh Scheme, 2011”.

However, owners of old vehicles have been given two years time to replace their existing registration plates with high security registration number plates.

All vendors eligible under the “Motor Vehicles (New High Security Registration Plates) Order, 2001” and under “Rule 50 of Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989” shall be able to sell high security registration number plates to vehicles registered with RLA, UT, Chandigarh.

The vendors should also possess a valid “type approval certificate” issued by any of the testing agencies authorized by the government. However, it would be the responsibility of the vehicle owners to procure the high security registration plates (and the third registration plate as the case may be) from any of the eligible vendors. Only after the high security registration number plates are fastened/affixed to the vehicle and the vehicle is found fit to ply on road, would a registration certificate be given to the vehicle owner.

The vendors, for the job, have already been notified and approved by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. All such vendors eligible under the “Motor Vehicles (New High Security Registration Plates) Order, 2001” and under “Rule 50 of Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989” shall be able to sell these number plates to the vehicles registered with Registering and Licensing Authority, Chandigarh. The vendors shall be required to possess a valid “Type Approval Certificate” issued by any of the testing agencies, authorised by the Centre.
