I4S video: IFSEC Centre Stage 2012 – Malcolm Cheshire (THIRDMARGIN)

Located in Hall 5 at the NEC in Birmingham, IFSEC International Centre Stage is a brand new educational feature for the show which runs from Monday through to Thursday next week.

It’s a free-to-attend educational theatre on the show floor designed for leading associations and industry figures to join forces and discuss many of the wider issues affecting the industry while at the same time offering thought-provoking debates.

Not only that, CPD points are available for all attendees to each session. What you might call a win-win situation, then.

Is lone worker protection a paradox?

On Wednesday 16 May between 1.00 pm and 2.00 pm, Malcolm Cheshire – chief executive at human dynamics and risk management consultancy THIRDMARGIN – takes to Centre Stage for a pivotal debate with Patrick Dealtry.

Cheshire will be arguing for the motion that lone worker protection is a paradox.

His contention is that ‘device-based’ protection doesn’t offer protection, and that the only effective form of protection is traditional close protection.

The paradox arises because, with such close protection in place, the worker is no longer alone.

Malcolm’s argument – to be disputed by Dealtry – will be based on research as well as his own experiences as a lone worker while serving as an NHS community nurse.

In our exclusive pre-IFSEC International 2012 interview (see below), Malcolm tells us why he feels IFSEC International organiser UBM has made a smart move in launching the new Lone Worker zone at the show, evaluates some lessons we can learn here in the UK from overseas in relation to lone worker protection and outlines some of the key issues in this arena just now.

On an important note, Cheshire also addresses the burning question: ‘Do you think the Corporate Manslaughter Act is a wake-up call in relation to lone worker protection?’

Watch the video and make sure you’re at the NEC next Wednesday for what’s surely going to be an interesting and thought-provoking session at conference.
