IFSEC 2011 Question Time: Steven Gerrard (Panasonic System Networks Europe)
Tomorrow is, of course, the opening day of IFSEC 2011. It’s also the first opportunity security practitioners will have to scan the latest developments in the Panasonic System Networks Europe security line-up.
Those developments include the highly-anticipated Super Dynamic 6 technology which can deliver 160 times greater wide dynamic range when compared with conventional cameras.
The all-new weather-resistant SD6 dome camera – designated the WV-CW590 (PAL/220~240 V AC versions) – features a day/night function offering 0.5 lux (colour) at F1.4 (wide) and 0.04 lux (black and white mode) at F1.4 (wide). Infrared cut filter switch on and off to enhance the sensitivity in black and white mode.
i-Pro SmartHD intelligent security solutions
In addition to the SD6, Panasonic’s also using IFSEC 2011 as a platform to showcase its very latest award-winning i-Pro SmartHD intelligent security solutions.
“These are designed to balance the best HD image quality with H.264 encoding to minimise network data traffic, thus reducing total cost of ownership,” said Steven Gerrard, UK and Ireland country marketing manager for Panasonic System Networks Europe.
A division of the Panasonic Corporation, Panasonic System Networks Europe is a leader in the provision of telecommunications, security and imaging solutions.
The company’s comprehensive portfolio extends from CCTV and IP cameras through to DECT telephones, document imaging and Electronic Point of Sale solutions, industrial medical cameras and home networking products.
In addition to providing fully integrated system networks solutions, the company’s services range from consulting and systems development right through to operation and maintenance.
Gerrard outlined: “Demonstrations on the Panasonic stand this year will also include a ‘WJ-NV200 Speed Challenge’ where participants are being challenged to become the fastest on the leader board in terms of setting up an IP surveillance network using a Panasonic WJ-NV200 i-Pro network video recorder.”
The winner of this competition will receive a Panasonic HDC-SD60 Full-HD camcorder, so any I4S readers out there who fancy taking part should pop along to the Panasonic stand early on in this year’s show.
Eliminating the need for a PC
The WJ-NV200, i-Pro SmartHD-compatible 16 channel network disk recorder eliminates the need for a PC, reducing the total cost of ownership for end users and removing time and complication from operation.
Panasonic has previously stated that the ‘analogue-like’ four-stage set-up and intuitive operation makes the WJ-NV200 versatile for a range of public locations and renders IP “simple”.
Gerrard continued: “This year’s IFSEC is going be big for Panasonic. We have some interesting stuff to show, including a 3D surveillance demo, the NV200 speed test and our latest i-Pro SmartHD kit.”
There are also plans for a new partner accreditation scheme and announcements around SD6 technology, plus “a whole host of other things” specifically designed to grab visitors’ attention.
Concept of 3D surveillance in security
The 3D surveillance concept is an interesting one to say the least. On the stand, Panasonic will be demonstrating the potential for 3D video monitoring.
“We want to bring displays one step closer to human vision,” explained Gerrard.
He then embellished the point. “PSNE is presenting 3D concepts as a future possibility for security. While we appreciate that it’s not necessarily a viable security application in today’s marketplace, one element of IFSEC is all about the promotion or exploration of new concepts for the security industry.”
Of course Gerrard’s quite right and, being a global AV leader, this necessarily means that Panasonic’s constantly innovating and exploring new directions for its technology in all sectors.
“As the momentum in IP security builds,” explained Gerrard, “so PSNE also builds and diversifies its range of security solutions.”
Putting a face to a name
At IFSEC 2011, Panasonic will also demonstrate real-time face matching technology within the latest i-Pro SmartHD range, optimising suspect identification and allowing facial image registration for 16 individuals (with facial recognition of up to eight people).
Face matching essentially becomes like another set of eyes monitoring cameras, freeing up more time for security personnel to perform other tasks. Panasonic is adamant this development will help create “a more efficient security operation”.
In essence, then, IFSEC 2011 affords delegates the chance to see the hardware and software solutions developed by the company to cater for an evolving market.
“While continuing to improve our analogue security products,” chipped in Gerrard, “Panasonic’s IP and hybrid analogue/IP solutions are designed to make IP simple and reduce business costs.”
