IFSEC International introduces Security Management Education Theatre for 2012

Created for security managers and all those responsible for managing the security of their organisation (including facilities, estate and building managers as well as property owners themselves), the brand new Security Management Education Theatre will host a free-to-attend, CPD points-earning programme which takes place throughout the world’s largest annual security and fire event: IFSEC International 2012, which runs from 14-17 May at the NEC in Birmingham).

Supporting industry research conducted by IFSEC International (which reveals that 94% of those responsible for managing their organisation’s security believe it’s important to stay up-to-date on the latest security knowledge by reviewing the sector at least every six-to-12 months), the 2012 education programme will provide technology updates, a focus on improved solutions to protect against internal and external threats and information on how to deliver against ROI as well as personal career development.

Highly regarded industry experts from Nottinghamshire Police, Wilson James, the Morgans Hotel Group and the CornerStone security consultancy will also be joining the line-up at what’s tipped to be IFSEC International’s most impressive security management offering to date.

Produced in association with TalAcq, the programme will feature a series of 30 to 45-minute presentation sessions from key industry figures and security management professionals followed by open Q&A sessions.

Confirmed speakers and subject areas

The opening session on Day One of the show, entitled ‘Dealing with the Insider Threat’, is to be led by Martin Smith MBE, the well-known and hugely respected chairman and founder of The Security Company. It will examine how best to tackle the human aspects of security and fraud prevention.

The former Royal Air Force officer, who was mainly assigned to counter-espionage and counter-terrorism duties throughout East and West Europe, will address the notion that the ‘Mark 1’ human being remains the greatest and continuing weakness in the entire protective regime.

A significant part of security risk management for many professionals is educating their own employer and helping them understand the consequences of different security threats (as well as the latest technologies, products and solutions that protect against them). With 68% of security managers citing either a Board position or a direct reporting line into their company’s Board as a ‘necessary’ for influencing security*, ‘The CSO and the Board’ (which begins the programme on 15 May) will help security managers’ understanding as to how the CSO can interface with the Board and influence business decisions based on perceived risk and compliance.

Other sessions to note for the Security Management Education Theatre include ‘Procuring Security Services: some thoughts on why and how to change’. This session (on midday on the opening day of IFSEC International 2012) is led by Mike O’Neill, the managing director of Optimal Risk Management.

In addition, Jon Roadnight and Narinder Dio – the directors of the CornerStone security consultancy – will take a look at ‘How to ensure your security technology Investment delivers the results you expect’. This session will run from 2.00 pm through to 3.00 pm on Monday 14 May.

Focus on the counter-terrorism agenda

Project ARGUS, the popular National Counter-Terrorism Security Office initiative, is the subject of another ‘not to be missed’ educational session exploring ways in which to aid delegates in preventing, handling and recovering from a terrorist attack.

The session (on 17 May at 10.30 am) will take attendees through a simulated terrorist attack.

Nottinghamshire Police’s assistant chief constable Paul Broadbent will lead a discussion alongside Mike Cherry (national policy chairman at the Federation of Small Businesses) on the pertinent subject of ‘Integration not Isolation: the public/private response to business crime’. This session takes place at 2.00 pm on 16 May.

Broadbent boasts extensive experience having served within the CID at every rank up to and including detective superintendent. He has led on serious and organised crime, major crime and gun crime, and has had responsibility for intelligence, undercover and covert policing.

In addition, Broadbent has led investigations on numerous high profile homicides, kidnap, terrorist and other serious crime enquiries.

‘Organisational Resilience’ is the title for a session to be tackled by Plan B Consulting, whose director Charlie Maclean-Bristol will cover the role of a business continuity manager and the questions you need to ask to focus on the most vulnerable security risks.

What the organisers say…

“Security professionals have a Duty of Care to provide solutions that will manage risks in the workplace,” explained IFSEC International’s event director Charlie Cracknell.

“However, if you don’t understand the potential risks to you and your business then how can you protect yourself?”

Cracknell continued: “Not only will IFSEC International 2012 equip security managers with the latest need-to-know education and Best Practice advice, but the show will also provide access to nearly 700 of the world’s leading solutions providers. In turn, that offers attendees the perfect opportunity to improve their knowledge of the latest innovations within the marketplace so they’re best informed to make correct procurement decisions.”

  • IFSEC International is the show for security managers, bringing together over 25,000 security professionals from over 100 countries across the entire buying chain: from manufacturers and distributors to installers, integrators, consultants and, of course, those responsible for security management within their organisation.
