Industry on track with environmental regulations

The British Security Industry Association believes the private security industry is getting to grips with new environmental regulations, and has released details of its new waste compliance scheme.

The scheme has been created to assist members in fulfilling their obligations under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) regulations, which come fully into force in July.

The WEEE regulations promote the reuse, recycling and recovery of electrical and electronic equipment. In simple terms, the regulations transfer the cost of dealing with waste equipment from local authorities to the ‘producers’ of equipment.

“The private security industry is keen to become greener,” said BSIA technical and membership services director Alex Carmichael. “Members have been signing up to the scheme over the past couple of months in order to prepare for the new regulations, which are going to have a huge impact on all aspects of the UK industry.

“The BSIA has been involved in the consultation on the WEEE Directive from its conception ate European level, through to its implementation into UK law. As a result of this involvement, we have been able to keep members informed about the WEEE Directive and the impact it may have on their businesses. This means that members can prepare their customers over the coming months for the changes.”
