Lambeth College expands CCTV training facilities
The new facility, the only one of its kind in a further education facility in London, allows students to train on active CCTV systems.
SIA Chairman Ruth Henig, accompanied by SIA Vice-Chairman, Robin Dahlberg (both Lambeth residents) officially opened the new training facility in October.
Opening the suite, Henig said: “I am delighted to officially open the college’s CCTV training facility. As we keep being reminded, we are big on CCTV cameras in the UK – more than any other country.
“I am pleased so many students want to take advantage of and achieve an SIA licence to work in a sector that is vital to protecting the safety of the public and reducing crime.”
Since the college first started running security courses in 2001 over 15,000 trainees have passed through its doors. Many students are new to the security market, and often to formal education, so the college requires all applicants to take a skill assessment before starting the course.
Around 20 percent of each intake is given extra assistance in associated skills, such as literacy or English as a second language, and the college is proud that this support network allows it to achieve a 90 percent pass rate.
Richard Chambers, the college’s principle, is passionate about his belief that the courses offered by the college actually lead somewhere for the students.
“The real agenda is employment,” he said.
The majority of its students come to the college through word of mouth, and after running an advert in the Metro four years ago the number of students has been so great the college hasn’t felt the need to advertise since!
Kevin Faulkner, Project Manager said: “Here at Lambeth College we are proud to have such excellent facilities for CCTV training so close to Central London and we will continue to support the development needs of the security industry at prices that are affordable by all.”
The college currently runs three SIA approved courses, at prices notably cheaper than some private sector operations. This, said Faulkner, was a deliberate decision as the college felt that all individuals needed an opportunity to take the qualifications and prices “needed to be undercut”.
The courses and prices are below. Prices cover registration and examination fees and the courses run on a frequent basis through-out the year.
