Laser mapping used to ‘design out’ terror
Perseus, the Farnham-based security consultancy, used the technology to map a large area of Abu Dhabi’s National Exhibition Centre and the Zyed Stadium – the United Arab Emirates’ national football stadium.
By accurately scanning areas, the laser creates a 3D image that lets security consultancies take virtual walks and flights around the site from the comfort of their computers.
Working with local partner Dascam, Perseus then demonstrated how these 3D ‘data clouds’ can be used with risk, resilience and mitigation software to highlight weaknesses in security that could be exploited by terrorists.
Perseus operations director Gary Poole said the laser, which is accurate to 1cm over an 800m range, identified exactly where security systems and police would need to be placed to make sites safer.
“The police were impressed with the speed and accuracy with which we could do security scanning and the utility of the Perseus system appears to have won many admirers and potential customers,” he said.
