Claiming to be championing liberty, the party said it would introduce greater regulation of CCTV, review the role of the information commissioner and tighten the Data Protection Act, were it to come to power.
Although the party claimed that CCTV is too loosely regulated, the motion offered no details about what regulation the party would propose.
Liberal Democrat home affairs spokesman Nick Clegg said: “Britain has long distinguished itself by its liberal belief in the rights of the individual against the powers of the state. By stealth, this Government has given the state unprecedented snooping powers that affect each and every one of us. It is time that these powers were rolled back.”
