Lynne Featherstone MP set to address 2011 TSI Annual Conference and BSIA Annual Luncheon
Liberal Democrat MP for Hornsey and Wood Green and Parliamentary under Secretary of State for equalities at the Home Office, Lynne Featherstone is the minister tasked with responsibility for the Security Industry Authority and the ‘phased transition to a new regulatory regime’ for the security sector.
Later this month, Featherstone will address guests at The Security Institute’s Annual Conference by offering an update on what’s happening in relation to that transition.
As Guest of Honour at the BSIA’s Annual Luncheon and Security Personnel Awards 2011, Featherstone is due to offer a similar ‘State of the Nation’ address.
The Security Institute’s Annual Conference 2011
The 2011 Annual Conference organised by The Security Institute for its dedicated membership – and sponsored this year by the Fire & Security Association – takes place on 22 June between 10.00 am and 5.30 pm at the City offices of Nomura International (located at 1 Angel Lane, London EC4R 3AB).
Conference is neatly sandwiched between the organisation’s Annual General Meeting (which begins at 9.15 am, and is to be chaired by The Security Institute’s president Lord Carlile) and the Annual Dinner and drinks reception (scheduled for the sixth floor terrace at the stunning Nomura building).
The 2011 event focuses on:
- the changing terrorism threat, including protecting citizens worldwide
- real-time Case Studies
- the latest trends in employee fraud
- developments in private sector regulation
- putting practical operational decisions into practice
Registration for the entire day’s events, plus a hearty breakfast for all delegates, will be open from 8.30 am through to 9.15 am.
Following on from an introductory address at 10.00 am courtesy of The Security Institute’s chairman Mike Bluestone, next to the lectern will be Richard Barnes. The deputy mayor of London is going to impart an overview of security in the Capital which should prove fascinating for all attendees.
Lynne Featherstone’s vital speech on the future of regulation then begins at 10.30 am.
Mid-morning refreshments and a chance for delegates to speak with exhibitors about cutting-edge developments in security solutions preface an invite back into the main lecture theatre for what will surely prove to be an interesting and informative selection of pre-luncheon deliveries.
First up at 11.30 am is Chas Treasure (senior security manager with the RSA) who’ll examine the theme of ‘Security: Game or Gamble’. Nomura’s own security specialist Andy Williams follows Treasure at noon with an overview of how companies might recover from disaster scenarios.
Stamping out fraud is the theme of security specialist John Scott’s presentation, with a particular emphasis on what happens at the Post Office (Scott serves as head of security for said organisation).
Counter-terrorism and employee fraud
The post-luncheon session begins at 2.00 pm with an intriguing presentation courtesy of Bassam Ghellal from risk management consultancy Whispering Bell. The title of this talk is: ‘Libya: The Way Forward for Business’.
‘Ten Years On and Post-Bin Laden: Success, Threats and Vulnerabilities’ is the subject of Dr Patrick Sookhdeo’s delivery. Representing the RMCS at Cranfield as a visiting professor at that academic institution, Dr Sookhdeo has spoken at previous Institute members’ evenings and is a recognised authority on his subject matter.
Prior to afternoon tea, Dan Morrison – senior partner at Grosvenor Law – has opted to talk about the latest trends in employee fraud (which does seem to be one of the hottest topics of the moment).
As if that little lot wasn’t enough, the final trio of presentations also promise much for the discerning practitioner.
At 4.00 pm, Big Brother Watch’s champion and director Alex Deane – who’s a barrister by profession and also serves on the Advisory Board at Privacy International – is scheduled to discuss ‘excessive surveillance’.
There has been much debate about ‘The Surveillance State’ in recent times, of course, not least on info4security/SMT Online, so it’ll be mighty interesting to hear Dean’s personal take on the matter.
Maintaining the surveillance theme
Continuing the CCTV theme is Jerry Woods, Fellow of The Security Institute and head of security at the University of Bristol (which recently played host to the 2011 National Conference run by the Association of University Chief Security Officers).
Using the banner headline: ‘Less is More: Using CCTV Wisely’, Woods will suggest that surveillance is not a security panacea.
In recent times, the decision was taken to review the University of Bristol’s centrally monitored and standalone CCTV systems and then examine operational requirements based on updated risk data.
It was subsequently determined that up to 250 cameras could be removed, while those cameras still in place were pinpointed for an upgrade. New cameras were added wherever coverage was deemed necessary, with central monitoring also assuming priority.
The last presentation of the day (at around 5.00 pm) comes courtesy of Security Industry Authority CEO Bill Butler, who’ll be providing an update on what’s presently happening at the Regulator.
The drinks reception begins at 5.30 pm, with dinner at 7.00 pm.
