Memory sticks ‘pose a security threat’

According to research commissioned by Tower Software, a fifth of employees break rules by storing corporate files on memory sticks.

In all, 55 per cent of employees questioned said they store work-related files like e-mails outside of their company’s shared computer network.

The report, entitled “Document Mayhem in the UK and Republic of Ireland”, found that 14 per cent of employees store corporate material on their work laptop, and nine per cent admitted to keeping work-related material their own personal computers. Eight per cent said they use portable hard drives for storing work files and seven per confessed to using their mobile devices.

Tower Software’s vice president in EMEA, Paul Brenchley, said, “Worryingly, one per cent are unsure which of these locations they’ve stored work-related files in.

“I’m surprised that these figures are so high. It seems that warnings about corporate security, compliance and information control simply aren’t registering with many employees.”

He said he was concerned with the effect poor information management can have on businesses on a day-to-day basis.

“Some consequences go beyond failing regulatory compliance, frustrating co-workers, losing customers and bad publicity.

“In some organisations, getting the right information to the right people at the right time is absolutely critical.”
