DAC Clarke has been with the Metropolitan Police for over 30 years and has spent five years as National Co-ordinator of Terrorist Investigations.
He will retire from service on January 31, 2008. As of yet, there are few details about Clarke’s plans for the future, other than a statement he is “retiring in order to pursue a range of new appointments and projects”.
The Metropolitan Police Authority (MPA) and the Met Commissioner said they accepted his resignation “reluctantly”.
MPA chair Len Duvall said: “DAC Peter Clarke is a dedicated public servant, often working behind the scenes, who made an immense contribution to protecting the public and in doing so has undoubtedly saved lives.”
MPS Commissioner Sir Ian Blair added: “DAC Peter Clarke has performed outstandingly. His contribution to the fight against terrorism has been truly significant.”
The Met said that arrangements to appoint a successor are in motion, and an advertisement will appear shortly.
