Multiple paint layer hazards

[

The potential hazards of buildings which have accumulated multiple layers of paint are being addressed in a newly launched code of practice. The code,’The Multi Layer Paint fire safety code’, was developed by Bodycote Warringtonfire following research into the issue with a consortium of four city councils and seven paint manufacturers.

The aim of the research, supported by the DTI, was to develop a code of practice for specifiers who need to maintain the fire safety of public and multi-occupancy buildings. Many of these are subject to frequent refurbishment, resulting in multiple applications of decorative or anti-graffiti paint onto walls, ceilings and stairwells.

As a result of the research, new assessment procedures have been developed, and fire protective coatings may now be selected and applied in a standardised way when the refurbishment of communal buildings is required.

Bodycote Warrington Fire are running a workshop in Warrington on 12 March to explain the research and code of practice.
