National fire risk research initiative gains support
[
The need for a national fire risk network and a concerted approach to fire safety research was highlighted at a recent FERN (Fire Engineering Research Network) seminar and workshop, organised by researchers at the Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen
The team is led by Stephen MacKenzie, who has full responsibility for all fire engineering projects at the university. He produced proposals for the funding of an integrated forum consisting of key people in the area of fire research; and for a survey of key people’s perceptions of future research and educational requirements.
The proposed forum is designed to bring all stakeholders together and identify research work in what is perceived is a fragmented community.
A survey to understand stakeholders’ perceptions of fire risk research, education and guidance is underway and has the following objectives:
– identification of key stakeholders and groupings;
– construction of a stakeholders’ database;
– understanding stakeholders; perceptions of fire risk infrastructure needs in terms of research strategies, education and guidance provisions;
– the extent of support for the proposed network and forum;
– stakeholders’ aspirations and proposals for the development of the fire risk network and forums.
The target audience are those who have a specific legislative or regulatory responsibility, or an interest in the assessment, mitigation and management of fire risk in the built environment.
Researchers have sent out 2500 forms (with a target of 3000) with approximately 100 returns to date. “The quality of the response has been excellent so far. Judging by the responses, 95 per cent so far support the need for this type of survey,” said Mr MacKenzie.
An initial analysis is expected early in 2006, with a full report in the summer.
