New guidance for on-site steel protection
[
A new guide on intumescent coatings applied on site to steel structures has been published by the Association for Specialist Fire Protection.
TDG 0011 covers the entire process of coatings on site and deals specifically with hot rolled structural sections and hot rolled structural hollow sections
designed for use in buildings.
It establishes procedures for the specification, application and control of coatings on site, and is designed to help conform with building regulations and BS 9999, which offers alternative ways of designing fire protection. The guide is designed to complement existing guidance from the Steel Construction Institute’s document, P160, and from the ASFP’s publication, Fire Protection for Structural Steel in Buildings (the Yellow Book).
Figures from 2003 show that intumescent coatings held over 40% of the multi-storey market and that of this, two-thirds was applied on site and one-third off site (Construction Markets Annual Survey, Corus Construction and Industrial).
