Last week’s government reshuffle has resulted in a new minister heading up the fire and resilience brief at the Communities & Local Government department. Sadiq Khan MP takes over from Parmjit Dhanda as parliamentary under secretary of state with responsibility for community cohesion, communities, equalities and local government and fire & resilience.
Although no specific mention is made in the announcement of any responsibilities for fire and rescue, a spokesperson for the CLG told FSE that the appointment does indeed include the fire safety brief, and that the new minister’s duties would be broadly in line with those of his predecessor.
Sadiq Khan was previously a minister in the government Whips office, where he had special responsibility for managing Ministry of Justice legislation. Before entering the government, he was a visiting lecturer at the University of North London and London Metropolitan University, and a former governor of South Thames FE College.
