State of Physical Access Trend Report 2024

‘No Jail’ just isn’t an option at any time

It is not in the least bit surprising that retailers are vehemently opposed to the plans afoot to make the highest sentence for acts of shop theft a ‘high level community service order’. Retailers are already under significant pressure to combat shrinkage, and continually deter thieves from targeting their stores. These recommendations on proposed sentencing changes deliver the wrong message entirely to would-be thieves.

Our research shows that, every year, almost three quarters of a million individuals commit acts of shop theft against British retailers. That figure can only increase if the stance taken against them by the Judiciary is to be softened with a ‘No Jail’ option.

Make no mistake that shop theft is a serious criminal activity. If they are to effectively discourage this type of crime, retailers really need the full weight of the law to support them.
