The system, which can be controlled remotely, was installed in 180 cells to stop inmates hiding drugs and weapons in their toilets.
Prison staff can now control water flows to prisoners’ toilets, showers and hand basins from a single unit.
“It saves water, is more flexible and more hygienic than traditional control methods,” said a spokesperson for Wallgate, the sanitation specialists behind the system.
The installation, at HMP Lewes (a category B prison), is now expected to be copied at police cells, secure mental health facilities and military detention centres around the country.
