State of Physical Access Trend Report 2024

Original key car theft a growing problem

Research published by recently by SBD suggests that over 80% of newer stolen cars in Europe were a result of theft by using the original key.

It notes that the high levels of security fitted to modern vehicles mean that many thieves may now only be able to steal the vehicle using a key registered to that car.

According to SBD, this is particularly noticeable trend in the theft of high end vehicles and is expected to continue.

The report notes that increasing key-theft of high-value cars by professional criminal gangs has led to a significant reduction in recovery rates and a corresponding increase in total loss claims for insurers.

SBD highlights that some European insurance providers are now looking at standards for the fitting and operation of vehicle tracking devices in order to increase the chances of vehicle recovery, a different approach from the traditional objective of preventing theft through alarms or immobilisers.

Paul Burnley, SBD Security Specialist and author of the vehicle tracking report, notes, “Whilst the refinement of GPS technology has enabled many companies to launch vehicle tracking systems, these products may be ineffective at recovering vehicles after theft unless basic security principles are applied in the development, integration and operation of the system.

“These reports from SBD will help designers seeking to develop effective vehicle tracking products that may also gain the benefit of widespread insurance approval in the European market.”
