Police congratulate door staff in Leeds
Twenty-one premises were visited in the centre on Thursday and Friday as part of a nationwide clampdown on unlicensed security staff.
One person was cautioned by police and SIA investigators for not displaying their SIA card.
A similar operation in Wakefield earlier this month found five unlicensed door staff working at the town’s bars and clubs.
Under the Private Security Industry Act 2001 door staff and security guards working at public premises must be licensed and display their card whilst working.
PC Mick Warburton, Licensing Officer for City and Holbeck Neighbourhood Police said:
“The operation proved a great success and shows that premises and the door staff are abiding by the rules.
“We have conducted this operation in partnership with the SIA as part of continuing efforts to give people a safe and enjoyable night out in Leeds.”
To operate legally, door supervisors must be licensed with the SIA, having successfully achieved a relevant nationally accredited training qualification. They also need to pass a criminality check and pay a licence fee.
Failure to comply with rules could lead to prosecution and a maximum penalty of six months in prison and a fine of GB pound 5,000.
PC Warburton said:
“Door staff play a key part in dealing with violent crime and they are an important element of our partnership working. Those who are working unlicensed are doing so illegally and can contribute to crime and disorder.
“I would urge members of the public to report any potential breaches of the law or conduct of concern associated with door supervisors.”
Lucia Howland, an SIA Head of Investigation said it was encouraging to see the majority of door staff complying with the law.
“We work very closely with West Yorkshire Police and door staff to ensure that the legislation is being complied with.
“We, like the police, only want to see professional, trained and fit and proper door supervisors working in the city’s pub, clubs and bars, ensuring that the public enjoy a safe night out. ”
