Police to respond to counter-terrorism advice
The authority’s 23 members expect to hear the Met’s response to recommendations they made in a recent counter-terrorism report and will discuss the developments following its publication.
“Counter-Terrorism: The London Debate” asked over 1000 Londoners about their attitudes towards policing in light of the 7/7 bombings and found ‘profound support’ for the force’s counter-terrorism efforts.
Len Duvall, Chair of the MPA, said that while all available tools need to be used to prevent terrorism, they are determined that policing should be as transparent and accountable as possible.
“We believe the public has every right to ask questions about the way counter-terrorist police operations are conducted, and the Authority will continue to scrutinise this work on behalf of Londoners”, he said.
“Harnessing the expertise of London’s communities and their overriding desire to prevent further atrocities is the best way we have of defeating terrorism.”
He continued, “The Met will be responding to our recommendations, which we firmly believe will deliver real change for the better in the way we tackle terrorism in London and the United Kingdom. “
The authority, which was set up to scrutinise the work of the Met, will elect a chair and deputy chair(s) at the event. Commissioner Sir Ian Blair will also attend to give an update on operational policing issues in London and present a written performance report.
